VILEBORN is a TTRPG that evokes a coming-of-age story, biting and adventurous. Players will interpret the Vileborn, young half-blood heroes forced to face the darkness of the world and brave enough to embrace their own.

The game features typical themes of nobledark stories as metaphors for the path from adolescence to adulthood. While playing, you will narrate the most iconic aspects of coming-of-age hero journeys: the hard and rigorous training, the conflicting relationship with mentors, the exploration of your dark lineage and the fear associated with it, the camaraderie and the bonds that are forged in adventures in a perilous world.

Five years ago, Darkness appeared in the skies above Egas.
Now, days are barely lit by a sun shrouded in black: it is getting colder and colder, food is scarce, and the Reviled are everywhere. Vampires, Fallen, Werewolves: every creature of the dark has crawled out of their lair, ready to stake their claim to power in this eternal dusk.

You are Vileborn: half human, half Reviled.
You were just children when your corrupted lineage manifested itself, subverting your life and separating you from your loved ones. The Luminarian Church, spiritual guide of the Empire and riding a tide of moral fervor, is now instigating the whole world to hunt and persecute you in the name of faith.

The Empress of Egas wants to transform you into a weapon.
Desperately looking for leverage in the war against the Reviled, the Empress of Egas has issued the Lex Umbræ, a decree to draft every Vileborn and place them under the authority and protection of the Order of Dusk – an ancient society devoted to safeguarding the Empire.

You are the first Vileborn enlisted into the Order of Dusk.
You are at the center of a rift between Church and Empire.
You are aware that the adults around you don’t have all the answers.
You are at odds with your nature; you are feared and despised by all.

Young adults bound to Darkness, in a world that despises you and needs you.

Your dark lineage awakened with the coming of Darkness, granting you strange impulses and gifts.

Young enough, old enough
Your childhood ended when you saw your parents’ convictions shatter; your adolescence was spent observing the next generation growing up unaware of the world before Darkness permeated it.

Recruits for the Order of Dusk
You will be trained to use your Gifts to hunt and fight the Reviled. Your tutors will teach you that your soul is stained by sin, an idea that you will question while playing the game.

Vileborn relies on a single, fundamental mechanic – once you learn it, that is all you will need to keep in mind. When you face a test…

1. Choose an approach

Choose between Force, Willpower, Influence, Reason, Precision, and Subterfuge. Each approach is associated with a different die (d6, d8, or d10) that represents your aptitude for that way of acting.

V: “I want to lift the guard in the air, to show that I am not joking around. I use Impetus – which is a d8 for me, so all the dice I will roll will be d8s.”

2. Roll 1 to 3 dice

Choose All the dice you will roll correspond to the dice size of the approach you chose:

1 base die granted by the approach
+1 die if you use your personality
+1 die if you use your training

V: “I am Impulsive, so I bring my personality into play, but I have no training that suits this test, so I will roll 2d8!”

3. Keep the highest result

Keep the die showing the highest result and compare it with the difficulty:

• Above: success
• Equal: success and complication
• Below: complication

V: “The results of the dice roll are 2 and 5. I keep the 5, which equals the difficulty of the test. I get one success and one complication.”

4. Narrate the outcome

Describe the outcome of the test considering all successes and complications.

• You will narrate the successes and use them to achieve your goals.
• The GM will narrate the complications and use them to apply conditions or make the scene more dangerous and interesting!
